In the tradition of the Andes, ayni is the guiding principle of life. The essence of this Quechua concept is sacred reciprocity, a relational flow of energy as a process of establishing and maintaining balance. Ayni can be seen as a code of conduct – a sacred agreement to engage in a balanced exchange between self and others. This can include not only other human beings, but the animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, the mineral kingdom, even those energies which we cannot see with our eyes.
In practicing ayni, it is the heart that counts. What is given may not be as important as how it is given. Before each encounter in your day ask what you can give to the relationship, such as your time, your respect, your energy, your compassion, or your gratitude. Then gift this from a place of an open heart.
The conscious practice of ayni has the potential to deepen your awareness of the interconnectedness of life and all our relations. We encourage you to begin practicing ayni in the very next encounter you have with another human being. Notice how it feels and how that person responds to your heart-centered offering of sacred reciprocity.
